The close bond of a personal friendship inspired Simon Burt and his wife Anna to invite the Cornwall Down’s Syndrome Support Group in to their Truro studio to create a personal portrait collection. The images will be on display at The Eden Project from 28th February to 27th March. This exhibition of photographs of Cornish people challenges the common perception of Down syndrome, presenting personalities first and diagnosis as a secondary aspect.

Down syndrome is a genetic condition involving an extra chromosome which occurs around the time of conception. A person with Down Syndrome has 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46. Trisomy 21 has been funded by the Bolingey Barbarians veterans rugby team committed to supporting children’s charities in Cornwall since 1993.

St Mawes Castle have been granted a licence to hold outdoor weddings.

To promote their new outdoor wedding facility, St Mawes Castle asked us to do some pictures that they could use in their publicity material. So with make up sorted by www.makeupbyella.com models in place, a gorgeous dress supplied by Elaine at www.countycreambridalhouse.co.uk and flowers supplied by Amanda at www.amandadavyflowers.com we were good to go. If only the weather had been kinder! As we arrived the dull but dry day turned to dull and wet, so with the help of a couple of speedlites and some Photoshop trickery we produced a set of images that a delighted Loraine at English Heritage described as ‘atmospheric’. We are looking forward to shooting our first wedding in this space.

Anna and I were recently asked to head over the Tamar to photograph the Boringdon Hall Hotel for its new owners Newquay-Hotels.co.uk

The brief was ‘Shoot the whole hotel in a day’. So we got to work with me shooting the main pictures and Anna assisting with lights and getting pictures of textures and details when she could. We supplied over 150 images for the designers at Creative Edge in Truro to work with and the result can be seen here http://www.boringdonhall.co.uk As the hotel undergoes a rolling programme to update the rooms and facilities we look forward to further visits!

Bay hotel, Newquay

I’ve just spent an afternoon at the Bay Hotel, Newquay shooting their newly refurbished bar.

I’ve had my fair share of interior shoots in the last couple of months and was delighted to be asked to provide images for the Bay’s new bar area. We shot the bar, the ballroom and a couple of exteriors before the light went completely. A good job done, tomorrow I’m heading to Plymouth to shoot another hotel for the Bay’s owners. Fifteen students egg race

It’s Student Week at Fifteen Cornwall

The students have taken over the kitchen at Fifteen Cornwall. Nearing the end of their course now the apprentices get a chance to show off what they have learned over the last eighteen months or so. Get in quick and save £15 off the price of dinner (until Thurs 20th Jan). To mark the event, the restaurant have hung my latest exhibition of portraits. This time in a departure from the format of the last couple of years I photographed them in groups and pairs doing something with food but not necessarily cooking it! Community Energy Plus win award with a little help from one of my pix!

Community Energy Plus have recently won an award with a photograph I took for them as part of their new website shoot. Go to http://www.cep.org.uk/ for their news. The new website is now online. Built by Slightly Different it is totally different from the old one and has a much more fun and user friendly feel. The pictures were all shot over three days a couple of months ago between dark clouds and showers we found the odd patch of blue sky!

I have just introduced a link from this site to my stock images on Alamy Photo Library. So dive in if you are looking for a picture for your website or a brochure or any other printed material. Just do a search after clicking the stock images tab and you will find everything from ‘laughing’ horses to joke barometers in Mousehole. Steve Ridd MBE and Laura Bower of Treasure Trails

Congratulations to all the Hub Award winners. I had the pleasure of photographing Laura Bower of Treasure Trails earlier on the day of the presentations.

We enjoyed a fantastic meal and were treated to a very slick presentation at The Atlantic Hotel where this year’s Hub Award winners were announced. Congrats to Laura Bower of Treasure Trails who won ‘Employee of the year’ and Anna Penrose of Mail Away who was nominated in the same catagory. I’ve photographed both ladies recently for Convergence News. Chris Hines of ‘A Grain of Sand’ gave an inspirational talk featuring his years of campaigning with Surfers Against Sewage and an insight into his approach to business. Thanks to the organisers of a very enjoyable event, we look forward to seeing you at the monthly Hub networking events in the future.

Nicola in her 'office'

I was asked to photograph Nicola Moule of www.fridaygirl.com for Business Link, but the photographs had to be ‘different’ and tell the story.

Hats off to intrepid Friday Girl Nicola for battling gale force winds on Gylly beach in the name of art!

We spent about an hour being buffeted by gale force winds to get the image which illustrated the fact that Nicola’s company could service their global clients from anywhere……even a Cornish beach. Fortunately the stair rods had not long ceased to fall and were replaced by blue skies! Shame the wind didn’t let up as well, I spent more time running between my shooting position and the sign to stand it up again than I did shooting pictures. Anyway persistance paid and apart from Nicola walking around with the risk of her sign becoming an unwelcome sail, the shoot was a success!
